Computing in EYFS and Key Stage One
Computing in EYFS and KS1
At Rosehill Infant School, we aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills to use technology confidently, safely and creatively. From EYFS through to Key Stage 1, pupils develop an understanding of computing through practical, engaging and age-appropriate experiences.
Early Years Foundation Stage
In EYFS, computing is taught through Understanding the World and is embedded within continuous provision and play-based learning.
Children:
- Explore a range of technology, such as tablets, computers and programmable toys
- Begin to understand how technology is used in everyday life
- Develop early problem-solving skills through simple programs and cause-and-effect activities
- Learn how to use devices safely and responsibly
Adults support learning by modelling the use of technology, encouraging exploration and introducing simple vocabulary such as computer, program, button and control.
Key Stage One
In KS1, computing is taught through a structured and progressive curriculum.
Pupils are taught to:
- Understand what algorithms are and how they are implemented as programs
- Create and debug simple programs
- Use technology purposefully to create, organise and store digital content
- Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school
- Use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private
Lessons are practical and engaging, allowing pupils to explore computing concepts through hands-on activities.
Progression and Sequencing
The computing curriculum is carefully sequenced so that:
- Skills and knowledge build progressively from EYFS to KS1
- Pupils move from simple exploration to more structured programming
- Key concepts such as algorithms, programming and online safety are revisited and developed
- Vocabulary is explicitly taught, modelled and reinforced through practical use.
Children are given opportunities to apply their learning across different contexts.
Assessment
Assessment is ongoing and based on:
- Observation of practical tasks
- Questioning and discussion
- Evaluation of digital work
Teachers use assessment to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching to support all learners.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils at Rosehill Infant School:
- Understand and can apply basic computing concepts
- Can create and debug simple programs
- Use technology purposefully and confidently
- Demonstrate an understanding of online safety
- Use appropriate computing vocabulary
Children leave with the foundations needed to continue their computing education and to navigate an increasingly digital world.
