Art in EYFS and Key Stage One

At Rosehill Infant School, we provide a rich and engaging Art curriculum that enables children to explore their creativity, develop key skills and express their ideas with confidence. From EYFS through to Key Stage 1, pupils build knowledge of materials, techniques and artists, while developing their own artistic voice.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In EYFS, Art is taught through Expressive Arts and Design and is embedded within continuous provision and play-based learning.

Children:

  • Explore a wide range of materials such as paint, clay, collage and natural resources
  • Experiment with colour, texture, pattern and form
  • Begin to develop control and coordination in drawing and mark-making
  • Express their ideas, thoughts and feelings through creative activities

Adults support learning by modelling techniques, introducing new vocabulary and encouraging children to talk about what they are creating. Opportunities are provided for both guided activities and independent exploration.

Key Stage One

In KS1, learning becomes more structured and builds on the foundations developed in EYFS.

Pupils are taught to:

  • Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
  • Develop techniques in drawing, painting and sculpture
  • Use colour, pattern, texture, line and shape with increasing control
  • Learn about a range of artists, craft makers and designers
  • Talk about their own work and the work of others

Lessons provide opportunities for children to practise and refine their skills, while also encouraging creativity and individuality.

Progression and Sequencing

The Art curriculum is carefully planned so that:

  • Skills develop progressively from exploration in EYFS to more controlled techniques in KS1
  • Pupils revisit key concepts such as colour, line and texture
  • Children move from experimenting freely to making more intentional artistic choices
  • Vocabulary is introduced, modelled and revisited to support children in discussing their work.

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing and based on:

  • Observation of children’s creative processes
  • Discussions about their artwork
  • Evaluation of finished pieces

Teachers use this information to support progression and ensure all pupils are developing their skills.

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils at Rosehill Infant School:

  • Can use a range of materials and techniques with confidence
  • Show creativity and individuality in their work
  • Talk about their ideas and processes
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic artistic concepts
  • Have knowledge of a range of artists and styles

Children leave with a strong foundation in Art and a love of creative expression.
