RE in the EYFS and Key Stage One
At Rosehill Infant School, Religious Education plays an important role in helping children understand the diverse world in which they live. Through RE, pupils develop respect, curiosity and an appreciation of different beliefs, cultures and traditions. Our curriculum follows the Derbyshire and Derby City Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, ensuring a broad and balanced approach.
Early Years Foundation Stage
In EYFS, RE is taught through Understanding the World, particularly through learning about people, culture and communities.
Children:
- Begin to explore different religions and beliefs through stories, celebrations and experiences
- Learn about special people, places and objects
- Talk about their own experiences and those of others
- Recognise similarities and differences between different traditions
Learning is supported through storytelling, role play, discussions and celebrations of festivals such as Diwali, Christmas and Eid. Adults encourage children to ask questions and share their ideas, helping to develop early understanding and respect.
Key Stage One
In KS1, RE is taught in line with the Derbyshire and Derby City Agreed Syllabus, building on children’s early experiences.
Pupils are taught to:
- Learn about Christianity and other principal religions represented in the local community
- Explore beliefs, practices and traditions
- Understand the importance of special books, places and symbols
- Ask and respond to questions about meaning, belonging and belief
- Begin to reflect on their own ideas and experiences
Lessons are enquiry-based, encouraging children to explore big questions and develop their understanding through discussion and reflection.
Progression and Sequencing
The RE curriculum is carefully planned so that:
- Learning builds from personal experiences in EYFS to wider understanding in KS1
- Pupils revisit key themes such as belief, belonging and celebration
- Knowledge develops progressively across different religions and worldviews
Children are supported to make connections between what they learn and their own lives.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils at Rosehill Infant School:
- Have an awareness of different religions and beliefs
- Show respect and understanding towards others
- Can talk about key stories, celebrations and practices
- Use simple RE vocabulary appropriately
- Reflect on their own ideas and experiences
Children leave with a developing understanding of the diverse world around them and the importance of respect and tolerance.
